Must-Haves vs. Preferences: How to Search Online Smarter
Every search mixes two kinds of wishes. Some are rules. Others are things you’d like. Search works better when it knows which is which.
Must-haves are rules
A must-have rules an item out when it is missing. Budget is a common one. Size is another. If an item is over your budget or in the wrong size, it does not belong in your results at all.
Preferences help sort
A preference is something you’d like. A color, a cut, a style, a condition, a feature. An item that lacks one is not wrong. It simply ranks lower than an item that has it.
Why the difference matters
When every selection is treated as a rule, small wishes can erase good options. When every selection is treated as a hint, a size or budget can quietly bend. Keeping the two apart gives you more to consider without showing you items that can’t work.
How GoTenten uses them
- You mark the few must-haves. Nothing that misses one is ever shown as a match.
- Everything else is a preference. Items are ranked against your preferences.
- If a store doesn’t list a detail, GoTenten shows it as unknown.
- Every result shows what it has and what it is missing.
Try it on your next search: decide your must-haves first, and let the rest sort itself.
